Concern over Japanese knotweed chemicals in water

Guernsey Water has called for a toxic herbicide to be banned after it was imported and used in Guernsey for the first time. The chemical, Picloram, was used to treat Japanese knotweed in St Martins and is currently on the Commerce and Employment department's list of approved substances for tackling knotweed.

The chemical has been used to clear an area of Japanese knotweed in St Martin that has been overrun by the invasive weed. This area is being cleared so it can be developed into a new social housing site that will home up to 20 elderly people. However, the discovery of Japanese knotweed has delayed the building work by over a year.

Dangers of Japanese knotweed chemical

Guernsey Water says that it wants the Japanese knotweed chemical banned because they are concerned that it will enter the island's water supply and lead onto health risks that include nausea and liver problems.

Andrew Redhead from Guernsey Water said "Guernsey is unique in that our reliance on surface water is that much higher than anywhere else.

"The advice is in respect of what I regard as dangerous chemicals, is that if they are being used anywhere near the water catchment area then people must approach the health and safety executive to seek professional advice."

Other forms of Japanese knotweed treatment

There are alternative Japanese knotweed treatment methods available if Picloram were to be banned. Our Japanese knotweed herbicide treatment uses a different chemical and proves to be extremely effective, however it should still not be used close to a water source.

If the knotweed is close to a water source then it is recommended that the weed is excavated so that there is no risk of contamination.
